One of Britain’s first Sinologists, Thomas Manning (1772-1840) was also known as a successful mathematician and a participant in the ‘first-wave’ of British Romanticism, alongside friends including Charles Lamb and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This talk will explore Manning’s contributions to British culture, and the wider significance of his efforts to encourage interest and awareness about China within Britain. It will also discuss how his project to learn about China responded to Britain’s political and intellectual climate, including the influence of the French Revolution, the Enlightenment, and the Romantic movement.
